The whole problem in my opinion with the way most people diet comes down to the fact that they only count calories but stop there. They do so because it is the simplest form of dieting that will yield some kind of results for someone who is currently eating improperly. People love to count calories for numerous reasons, unfortunately those reasons are not always what is best for both their health and fitness level.
Simplicity: Counting calories breaks down dieting into easy to understand terms that anyone can comprehend. Every food has a caloric measurement and people have a total number of calories as their overall goal. When things come that easy we should be suspicious, but unfortunately most people do not think like that as they only see the simplicity of it. If you are a beginner it is an option, otherwise you are honestly not truly trying your best to get results by only counting calories.
Sugar: Calorie counting puts no restrictions on sugar intake. It doesn’t take into account the fact that sugar and carbs in general are scientifically shown to be harder for our bodies to burn off. By also not putting any restrictions on sugar it gives the would be dieter a way to rationalize consuming it and still making them think they are indeed dieting. This is especially dangerous considering the fact that sugar has been shown to be as addictive as cocaine. Allowing people to consume an addictive and toxic substance on a diet really exposes how simply just counting calories is not an intelligent way of dieting overall.
Public Info: Even with research showing issues with only counting calories and data showing that low fat diets are unsuccessful, counting calories is still the only information the public receives about dieting.. There are two reasons why this is the case and will continue to be so. First off people do not want to hear the truth that their simple way of dieting is not effective, they want to continue to be living the lie that is blind calorie counting to rationalize their questionable eating habits. The second reason is that the companies that sell these products that do not fit into an effective diet will do everything in their power to make sure the recommendations are not changed. There is nothing wrong with counting calories as long as you understand calories from carbohydrates are not equal to those from fat and protein. By properly managing our macronutrients it puts us in the best position to lose weight. If you are happy with just losing a few pounds and don’t feel like putting in the effort to get dramatic results that is fine, just don’t fault people who go all out to get the results they want.
